Do as I say, not as I do

Let's revisit the recent 'campus carry' bill that was shot down (pardon the pun) in the 2011 Tennessee legislative session.

The bill would have allowed lawful handgun carriers who are employees of state colleges and universities to carry their handguns on campus.

As I mentioned in my previous post, there was a great brouhaha over this legislation, but one hoplophobic professor made a good point, that the legislature is posted against all weapons. His question was essentially, why would the legislature legalize carry on campuses, while prohibiting the same in the legislature?

This has the ring of "do as I say, not as I do," something we have become all too accustomed to hearing from our  government at all levels nationwide.

Its time for the legislature to legalize carry where they work, too, don't you think?

Bad guy, good guy

In the 2011 Tennessee legislative session, the Republican leadership accomplished nothing for gun rights. One interesting piece of legislation (that died) would have provided state university employees the legal option of being armed on campus. The usual suspects came out against this legislation, with their boringly predictable comments such as blood in the streets, drunk teenagers shooting it out, etc.

A University of Tennessee Police Department spokeswoman did have an interesting comment, according to the Knoxville News-Sentinel. '"It's going to slow down our response time to determine who is the bad guy and who is the good guy," said Lt. Emily Simerly, a UTPD spokeswoman.'

Note to Lt. Simerly, your department doesn't seem to be doing too well at determining bad guys vs good guys. Take for example, the story of a UTPD officer "linked to gambling operation" according to a News-Sentinel report last November.

    - or -

The story of a UT cop as one of 50 arrested in a drug sting, as reported in the News-Sentinel just last month.

Pogo had a saying, "We have found the enemy and he is us." Should the UTPD paraphrase Pogo, and adopt the slogan, "We have found the bad guy, and he works for us."?

Dumas, part deux - on weapons

"In every country where independence has taken the place of liberty, the first desire of a manly heart is to possess a weapon which at once renders him capable of defence or attack, and, by rendering its owner fearsome, makes him feared."
- from The Count of Monte Cristo

Sunday, May 15, 2011

Alexandre Dumas, pere, understood

why many of us carry personal arms. In The Count of Monte Cristo, one of the characters puts it this way:
“Unfortunately, madame,” answered Villefort, “the strong arm of the law is not called upon to interfere until the evil has taken place"
Note to all gun free zone advocates. This was true in 1844, is true today, and will be true as long as this earth continues. . .

Other people's money

I see that Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett has proposed, among other cuts, to cut out the discretionary funds for himself and county commissioners. It looks like most commissioners do not want their funds cut.

Have these commissioners considered that they are using OPM (other people's money) to spend as they please? Maybe for a good cause, but those OP are deprived of the opportunity to spend that money as they see fit.

Would those commissioners come to your house and collect that OPM with the barrel of a gun, so that they could spend it as they please? Not directly  - - they would just send the sheriff.

Packing heat at the NRA show

If you are planning on attending the NRA annual meeting this weekend, note that NRA says that it is legal to carry, so long as you obey the law.

Don't forget Cooper's four rules. Keep that gun in its holster, too, unless you need to use it. Don't be showing it off at the show.

Have fun.....

From the NRA website:
Note: Lawfully carried firearms are permitted in the Convention Center, in the Exhibit Hall and in the CONSOL Energy Center. Heinz Field prohibits the possession of firearms. When carrying your firearm, remember to follow all federal, state and local laws.

Happy birthday 1911

March 29, 2011 was the 100th anniversary of the adoption of the John M. Browning designed M-1911 by the U.S. Military. Mr. Browning was, IMHO, the greatest firearms inventor/designer ever. In addition to the 1911, he also was the chief designer of the Browning Hi-Power, the fiddy cal M2, the BAR and a myriad of other guns.

The 1911 was produced initially by Colt, then many other companies for GI contracts. In recent years, it has been produced by so many companies, I could not begin to name them all. This long list now includes Colt's early big competitor, Smith and Wesson.

One very interesting fact is that the 1911 can not only be field stripped fairly easily, it can also serve as its own tool box. Check out John Marshall's instructions HERE. Now, if you can find any of those grip screws Marshall mentions, let me know your source.

Happy birthday, 1911. 2011 also marks the 400th anniversary of the King James version of the Holy Bible. Read a little more about both HERE.

Taming Chaos with a Personal Plan

By Scott Stewart
Taming Chaos with a Personal Plan is republished with permission of STRATFOR.

Over the past week we’ve seen a massive earthquake and tsunami in Japan that caused a nuclear accident, the Saudis sending troops into Bahrain to quell civil unrest there and the government of Yemen taking measures to expel foreign media as protests have swelled against Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh.
We have also recently seen large-scale evacuations of expatriates from Tunisia, Egypt and Libya, and it is not unreasonable to assume that we might see a similar exodus from Bahrain and Yemen if developments in those countries deteriorate. Moreover, in Japan, the risk of radiation and conditions that are not yet under control at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant could force further evacuations there.
In light of this uncertain environment, STRATFOR thought it prudent to address once again the topic of personal contingency planning. Indeed, we also made this topic the subject of this week’s Above the Tearline video. While we have often discussed this topic in relation to terrorist attacks, its principles are also readily applicable to crises caused by natural disaster, war and civil unrest. When a crisis erupts, having an established personal contingency plan provides people with a head start and a set of tools that can help them avoid, or at least mitigate, the effects of the chaos and panic that accompany crisis events.

Knox County School Board March 2, 2011

The Knox County, Tennessee, School Board heard from citizens Wednesday evening. Those gathered to address the board fell into two categories; parents and grandparents who oppose Planned Parenthood being involved in our schools, and supporters of PP.

Although PP supporters fielded a few speakers, these were mostly younger people, augmented by a couple of middle-aged adults. One of these invoked the "if we can save just one child" strategy. Never mind the human misery created by incurable sexually transmitted diseases and unexpected pregnancies. There would seem to be more than a casual link between PP's philosophy, as shown on their web site, and unwanted juvenile pregnancies, providing new clientele for their abortion clinics.

Superintendent McIntyre seems to be of the opinion that teachers should not be inconvenienced by having to prepare to teach (do their job) 'health' classes.

There were several outstanding speakers who addressed the Board, but for the sake of decency, I cannot put their videos up. It was obviously embarrassing to these folks to quote what they had seen at the PP website for teens. In spite of their feelings, however, they forged ahead and apprised the board and the public of what they had seen.

A particularly good address was from Pastor Sam Polson, of West Park Baptist Church, Knoxville. Like Old Testament prophets who called on Israel to repent, Polson made very clear the serious moral implications of the School Board's allowing PP teaching in the schools. Polson quoted Jesus in Luke, Chapter 17, "Jesus said to his disciples: “Things that cause people to stumble are bound to come, but woe to anyone through whom they come. It would be better for them to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around their neck than to cause one of these little ones to stumble. So watch yourselves."

Here's where we stand now, as I understand it:
  1. Planned Parenthood is out of the school system beginning next year . . .
  2. But, Planned Parenthood stays in the school system for the remainder of this year.
  3. Planned Parenthood was reported to be training teachers, meaning . . .
  4. After Planned Parenthood leaves the school system, their curriculum will stay behind.
  5. Planned Parenthood's curriculum is reported to be in violation of Tennessee law.
Call me cynical, but I think one or two events need to occur to change this situation.
  1. Replacement of the School Superintendent, and perhaps . . .
  2. Replacement of the School Board.

Planned Parenthood out, but not yet!

We learn today from the Knoxville News-Sentinel that, although Planned Parenthood is getting the boot, it won't happen until the end of the school year:
Because the decision comes in the middle of the academic year, previously scheduled presentations by independent groups will be allowed to take place so as not to disrupt teachers' plans and class schedules, McIntyre said in a memo to school board members.
Does the school board not understand that the proletariat really don't want their children being taught by Planned Parenthood?

I just wonder, could they find qualified volunteers from the community to teach these classes without putting the PP spin on it?

What's wrong with electing the school superintendent, like we did in the past? Hiring the super insulates him from the people who pay his salary and makes it more difficult to hold him accountable.

Planned Parenthood aborted by Knox County Schools

Check latest update!

Michael Silence reports that the Knox County Schools have given Planned Parenthood the boot.

Could it be that Superintendent McIntyre and the Board of Education were just getting too much heat? Maybe they are thinking, PP gets the boot now or we get the boot next election.

Drill baby, drill

Gas is up again today, with the unrest in Libya.
Unless/until we gain some national sense and drill here, and also build our refinery capacity, it will just get worse. Quickly or slowly, I don't know.

And plugging your car into the already overloaded grid is not the answer, either.

Duh!

Constitutional carry bill DOA in Tennessee

I have confirmed with Senator Campfield that SB 397, the Vermont style or Constitutional carry bill is DOA this year. There was not a companion bill filed in the State House, and the deadline for filing has passed.

Tennessee carry bill follows Vermont law

UPDATE: This bill is DOA this year.

Senator Stacey Campfield recently introduced SB 397 in the Tennessee General Assembly. Here is a breakdown of the bill and the sections of the Tennessee Code Annotated it modifies. There are a few of my added comments, but the bill sections, when associated with the relevant TCA sections, are rather clear.

In a nutshell, Section 1 states that anyone not prohibited from purchasing a firearm may carry one (except as otherwise prohibited). Section 2 duplicates the historical Vermont statute, while eliminating the vague with intent to go armed section of current Tennessee law. Section 10 explicitly states that a permit is not required to carry a weapon in Tennessee. If a person can legally own a gun, he/she can legally carry it.

Governor Haslam has publicly stated, as reported in the News-Sentinel,

The time has come for gun owners to contact their legislators, get a companion bill in the House, and get this passed into law!

The bill and related current law are 'mixed' below. Color coding has been added for help.

SENATE BILL 397  - - By  Campfield

SECTION 1.  Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 39, Chapter 17, Part 13, is amended by adding the following language as a new section thereto:
39-17-1313.  Any resident of Tennessee who is a United States citizen or permanent lawful resident, as defined by § 55-50-102, who has reached twenty-one (21) years of age, and who is not prohibited from purchasing or possessing a firearm in this state pursuant to § 39-17-1316 or § 39-17-1307(b), 18 U.S.C. § 922(g), or any other state or federal law, may carry a firearm in this state except as otherwise prohibited by law.

SECTION 2.  Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 39-17-1307, is amended by deleting subdivision (a)(1) in its entirety and by substituting instead the following:
39-17-1307. Unlawful carrying or possession of a weapon. —
(a)  (1)  A person commits an offense who carries with the intent to go armed a firearm, a knife with a blade length exceeding four inches (4²), or a club.
(a)(1) A person commits an offense who carries a weapon, openly or concealed, [with the intent or avowed purpose of injuring a fellow man.]  [bracketed text is identical to Vermont 13-1-85-4003]

1611 - 1911

1611 - At the end of a conference with the Puritans, King James authorized the publication of the King James Bible (KJV). This version of the Bible has been the gold standard of Bibles in the English speaking world for four hundred years. Read Albert Mohler's discussion of the KJV HERE.

1911 - Three hundred years later, John M. Browning designed the Colt .45 ACP pistol, which became the Army issue M1911, and it was the standard issue pistol for about seventy years. It is also the pistol all others have been compared to for the last one hundred years. Read about the 1911 HERE.

Both are great tools.

The 1911 might help save your life.

The 1611 might help save your soul.

Constitutional carry bill introduced in Tennessee

Senator Stacey Campfield has introduced SB0397, which, if passed,
authorizes certain persons over 21 to carry a firearm without a permit; provides endorsements on driver licenses of persons who obtain a handgun carry permit; makes permanent the issuance of a handgun carry permit.

This bill if passed, and signed by Governor Haslam, would further restore the 2nd amendment towards its original intent.

Thanks, Senator Campfield!

Fifty million Americans are missing!

January 22, 1973. American service personnel were dying in Vietnam, as America acted to prop up the South Vietnamese government under the Domino Theory. Back home, war protests were going on, illegal drugs were all around us.
Things are pretty much the same now as then, except . . .

Small pistols and revolvers - constant companions

In a recent post on handgun stopping power, I mentioned that the first order of business is to be armed. In that post, I mentioned the NAA mini-revolvers. These are about as small as one can go with a firearm. NAA has a new player in Beta test right now, that they call the Ranger Breaktop. This iteration of the mini-revolver adds the break top action of the Smith and Wesson Schofield to their .22 Magnum model. I wish I had thought of that. . . . Actually, I did.

Tuscon shooting

The tragic shooting yesterday in Tuscon has fingers already pointing at conservatives and at legally armed citizens as well.

The fact is, political assassinations have been a part of human history since antiquity.

It will be interesting to find out what kind of juvenile record the perp had (if any). It seems obvious that he is no more normal than the killer at Luby's Cafeteria.

For more details on the gun used, check out Beregon's Bar. H/T to SayUncle for the link.

Ruger to introduce new .22 Magnum pistol?

Not that I know of,  but Ruger has apparently cloned another Kel-Tec, the PF-9.

First it was the LCP which took the KT P3AT configuration, and added a slide stop. The rest, as they say, is history. LCP sales have been very successful.

Then, the Glock OS with the addition of a manual safety gives us the SR-9, which is, in my opinion, a sweet gun.

Now, with much fanfare, comes the Ruger LC9. To me, it appears to model the PF-9, with the addition of a manual safety. Michael Bane's video review is HERE.

So, why not a new .22 Magnum auto-loader, with a few 'improvements' on the KT PMR-30.
- - -Maybe a magazine safety (yuk), and a striker fired system; and lets go whole hog and add a .22 Long Rifle conversion kit in the box. All for a MSRP of $499. This would be a real poor man's Five-seveN.

Seriously, I think LC9's will sell like hotcakes for Ruger. Recoil will be snappier than the SR-9's, but certainly softer than the LCP's.

Now, to see who's packing some real big heat check out MJM.

UPDATE JANUARY 2013. If you like the idea, contact Ruger Customer Service and let them know.

UPDATE APRIL 2015. Ruger tells me that to have soft enough brass for reliable ignition, there is too much danger of a blown case. Consider the .22 TCM 9R.

Curly fry light bulbs

Do you remember when cleaning up a broken light bulb involved a broom and dust pan? Well not any more. Common sense has gone out the window, with environmentalism gone awry. Common Cents explains why.
