Former Maryland Trooper notes that he was wrong regarding handgun permits

I saw this first at Bearing Arms. The gentleman makes a Fonzie statement at 2:13 in, "I was wrong."

He was a Maryland State Trooper, in charge of their may-issue permitting system. Maryland has made life so difficult for gun owners that Beretta decided to leave the state.

The whole idea of having to prove your need to provide for your own defense is absurd. Self defense is a natural right, and politicians have long stepped over the bounds of human decency, removing, particularly from those who are not well-connected, the means of self defense.

The problem with Common Core

Dr. Mike Carlson takes a look at Common Core, and finds it lacking:

The problem with a helping of Federal funding is that it is always served with a side of Federal control.

Remember the double-nickel speed limit imposed by the states? The Feds did not have the power to "require" the states to impose the speed limit. But, they did use the coercive force of the purse strings to "gently persuade" the states to get in line.

I still recall vividly the tenth of June, 1976, while travelling the Pennsylvania Turnpike at the speed limit, being passed by a limo with government plates. I would guess that the limo was running at about 75 or 80.

I bet those behind imposing these CC standards almost exclusively send their children to private schools.

Rules for thee, but not for me. . .

What do you think?

Post 1986 machinegun ban illegal?

Long story short. In 1934, a $200 transfer tax was imposed on purchases of machineguns. Sales of newly manufactured machineguns were banned in 1986.

Can the government show that one can be denied the unalienable right to such a militia firearm?
Can the law pass the strict scrutiny test? I think not.

This is a 1-day, 12 hour, Tactical First Aid class, that will cover most of the Life Threatening injuries, that statistically, we in the Shooting/Tactical Community have a higher than average chance of being involved in, whether directly, or just being present on the scene.

odeur de Bloomberg

Examiner David Codrea reports on an Illinois Bill introduction that has the odeur de Bloomberg all over it.

This draconian bill was introduced by Democrat State Senator Jacqueline Y. Collins (not that Jackie Collins).

From her bio:
In 1984, she served as press liaison for the Rev. Jesse Jackson during the Democratic National Convention . . . .  and also had the distinction of serving as a 2001 Legislative Fellow for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton in Washington, D.C.
So, this bill, coming from one associated with the 1994 gun ban cabal, should come as no surprise.

No hate crime charges against George Zimmerman

Turns out the Obama Administration's DOJ was not able to gin up find any evidence with which to charge Zimmerman with a hate crime.

I guess not. The evidence at trial clearly showed that Zimmerman was on the brink of having his skull turned into a bowl of mush. Further commentary at Examiner HERE.

Race Relations and Law Enforcement

Reprinted by permission from IMPRIMUS, a publication of Hillsdale College.

Jason L. Riley
Editorial Board Member, Wall Street Journal

Jason L. Riley on Race Relations and Law EnforcementJason L. Riley is an editorial board member and a senior editorial page writer at the Wall Street Journal, where he writes on politics, economics, education, immigration, and race. He is also a FOX News contributor and appears regularly on Special Report with Bret Baier. Previously, he worked for USA Today and the Buffalo News. He earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He is the author of Please Stop Helping Us: How Liberals Make It Harder for Blacks to Succeed.

The following is adapted from a speech delivered on January 30, 2015, at Hillsdale College’s Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship in Washington, D.C., as part of the AWC Family Foundation Lecture Series.
Thomas Sowell once said that some books you write for pleasure, and others you write out of a sense of duty, because there are things to be said—and other people have better sense than to say them. My new book, Please Stop Helping Us, falls into that latter category. When I started out as a journalist 20 years ago, I had no expectation of focusing on race-related topics. People like Sowell and Shelby Steele and Walter Williams and a few other independent black thinkers, to my mind at least, had already said what needed to be said, had been saying it for decades, and had been saying it more eloquently than I ever could. But over the years, and with some prodding from those guys, it occurred to me that not enough younger blacks were following in their footsteps. It also occurred to me that many public policies aimed at the black underclass were just as wrongheaded as ever. The fight wasn’t over. A new generation of black thinkers needed to explain what’s working and what isn’t, and why, to a new generation of readers. And the result is this book, which I hope will help to bring more light than heat to the discussion of race.
The book is not an autobiography or a memoir, but I do tell a few stories about growing up black and male in the inner city. And one of the stories involves a trip back home to Buffalo, New York, where I was born and raised. I was visiting my older sister shortly after I had begun working at the Wall Street Journal, and I was chatting with her daughter, my niece, who was maybe in the second grade at the time. I was asking her about school, her favorite subjects, that sort of thing, when she stopped me and said, “Uncle Jason, why you talk white?” Then she turned to her little friend who was there and said, “Don’t my uncle sound white? Why he tryin’ to sound so smart?”

Should guns be tax-exempt?

I address this question, with a look at the Newspaper exemption in my Examiner column HERE.

If you can't ban guns, try ammo . . .

. . . starve those AR-15's to death.

Examiner David Codrea reports of the Administration's proposal to ban commonly used ammo HERE.

The predictable result will be shortages and higher prices on ammo, assymetrically affecting lower-income citizens' ability to buy effective defensive rifle ammo.

"I support the Second Amendment, BUT....

JPFO Update (reprinted with permission)

An Update On
Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership

From the passing of Aaron Zelman in December 2010 to its Adoption
by the Second Amendment Foundation in September 2014

by Alan Korwin
with guidance from
Rabbinic Director Dovid Bendory
former Executive Director Charles Heller
former Board of Directors officer Bob Meier
When Aaron Zelman left this world on December 21, 2010, after 21 years as the founder and mastermind behind Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership, he left the world a significant ideological legacy.
JPFO was Aaron’s invention and creation, and like similar constructs, it reflected him uniquely from top to bottom. There was no other Moses figure to step in and take over. He had put his people on the path out of an iron bondage of mental oppression, a firearm slavery that took social, psychological and physical forms.
JPFO served a function matched by no other group in the freedom struggle, mobilizing a constituency that up to that point lacked voice. Oddly enough, it resonated as loudly with Gentiles as with Jews, a point that surprised Aaron but one he took in stride. He happily accepted any support in the quintessential battle that would never again allow government—or anyone—to attempt to wipe out His People—or anyone.

U.S. Flag being forced down in View Harbor Subdivision

Today, at 3 pm in View Harbor Subdivision in West Knox County, an Air Force veteran is being forced to quit flying the Stars and Stripes by the petty potentates of her HOA. The address is:

If yo can spare a few minutes on this busy Valentine's day, come out and show support for Delia Foster, a 24-year Air Force veteran, as she strikes the colors with the help of the American Legion.

The story was reported by Channel 10 and Channel 8 last night:

The Congress and the Tennessee Legislature should act on this clear freedom of expression issue. Any lout is Constitutionally protected if he wants to burn Old Glory, but someone who signed a contract to give her all, up to and including her very life; then gave 24 years for her, can't fly Old Glory!
Please come out and support Foster.

Vermont ‘gun control’ push draws organized opposition

It has worked well for them. They don't need more stinkin' gun control laws, either.

Tennessee 2015 Guns in Parks bill gets media attention

WBIR-TV interviewed Mayor Ralph McGill and me on the issue. McGill feels he must maintain control of citizens who:

  • Have no felony convictions
  • Have never been convicted of domestic violence
  • Have no history of mental illness, aclohol or drug addiction
  • Have passed an FBI background check, with fingerprints on file with the FBI
  • Have passed mandatory training in firearms usage and applicable law

Yet Farragut does not provide any semblance of security at Farragut parks, or along greenways. Felons are free to come and go as they please.

How long has it been since you have seen any armed security at Farragut parks?

POTUS has heard the truth

Yesterday, Darrel Waltrip was the keynote speaker at the National Prayer Breakfast. In attendance were POTUS, FLOTUS, the Daila Lama, and other dignitaries.

Waltrip gave an excellent address, in which he claimed the exclusivity of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me." (John 14:6)

Consider Jesus's claim, and Waltrip's statement. If true, they are true to the exclusion of all other roads to salvation.

What path will you follow?

Musing on the UT gun debate

See my Examiner commentary HERE.

American Sniper

We have seen the news of record box-office receipts of the movie American Sniper.

Great, thought-provoking movie.

Guess what the gun-ban activists will go after now.

Guess what the next surge in rifle shooting will be.

Guess what sort of rifles will be in short supply for a while.

The answer is

Precision Rifles
DPMRFLR-308

- and remember the banners, unlike Goldilocks, can never find a gun that is just right!

  1. This gun is too accurate (deer gun, target rifle)
  2. This gun is too big (fiddy cal)
  3. This gun is too small (Satiddy night special)
  4. This gun holds too many bullets (AR-15, Glock 17)
  5. This gun is painted with camouflage. (with lead-free paint)
  6. This gun has a pistol grip.
  7. This gun has a flash suppressor.
  8. This gun has a bayonet lug.

And hunter friend, if you thought your thutty-thutty was safe, think again. Stand together, or . . .

Je suis humaine

In some jurisdictions, "Je suis d'Artagnan"  or Je suis arme is not permitted by those who maintain a monopoly on violence(government). David Codrea, writing HERE. notes the appeal by French Jews for some "designated shooters" to defend the community. Of course, those designated shooters won't have a crystal ball, so in effect the community members will still be on their own.
