Zenith Zoysia update

If you have bare areas, take a look at these photos, and then check out the tab at the top entitled Tennessee lawn grass. These are photos of Zenith Zoysia taken during the second growing season. Click to see a larger image. Seed were sewn over plug aerated soil May 2013. These pictures were taken June 17, 2014.
Seed sprouted last summer, watered last summer PRN, and only rain water this second summer. No topsoil here.

The longest stolon (runner) is about a foot long.

By the end of year four, with just rain water, this are should have close to complete coverage.
The green clump in the center is a Zoysia plant. As it grows, it will put runners out into the bare area.

Unwarranted attack on permitless open carry

My rebuttal to a recent letter to the editor of the Knoxville News-Sentinel. If you subscribe to the N-S, you can see the slightly edited version they published HERE.
Photo © Oleg Volk. All rights reserved. Used with permission

The recent letter writer, Ben Brabson, in his opposition to permitless open carry of handguns, begins with an ad hominem attack on Senator Campfield, and ends with a false assertion concerning the conduct of fellow Tennesseans.
He reminisces about his childhood firearms usage and the safety indoctrination he received from his father and uncles. I guess he missed the Bill of Rights indoctrination, which speaks of keeping and bearing arms, not for food gathering or pest control, but for defense against unlawful felonious aggression. I guess he missed the definition of infringed in the Second Amendment, which has the same meaning as abridged in the First. Maybe, too, he missed the definition of the people.
The fact is, the writer shows his callous disregard for the safety and well-being of his lower-income neighbors who can’t afford the poll tax on the individual right to bear arms. He, by extension, becomes a co-conspirator with criminals who prey on the lawfully disarmed. Are the lives of these citizens of such less value?
He asserts that if permitless open carry is passed next year,
there will be a version of the gunfight at the O.K. Corral repeated in every county of the state on a daily basis.
He may be surprised, then, to learn that every county of every state bordering Tennessee, except Georgia already has permitless open carry. Can he point to crime statistics that would support his assertion? In Kentucky alone, that would add up to 43,800 gunfights last year.
He insults Tennesseans by insinuating that we are less capable of self-restraint than people in those seven states. Are we, sir, such a bunch of rubes, that we can’t be trusted to exercise a God-given, natural right, unless we first purchase a permission slip from our Master, the State?
Respectfully,
Liston Matthews

Ultimately, there is no middle ground. Gun prohibitionists keep looking for ways to reduce/eliminate private ownership and use of firearms. They are never content, either, with partial steps. Given their choice, total prohibition is the ultimate goal.

Best Barbecue!!

I have been grilling and smoking meat for many decades, but today I cooked the best ribs ever.

My ribs have usually been somewhat dry by the time they had smoked for several hours. I have recently seen some folks on the tube smoke the ribs for three hours at about 250, then wrap in foil, and put back on the grill for another three hours at 250.

Did that today!

The bones pulled right out, and you can cut the meat with a fork. So tender and juicy.

Less sauce on the face, too.

Give it a try.

Vehicle carry legal July 1, 2014 in Tennessee - no permit required

Here is a breakdown of the Vehicle Carry bill as passed by the Tennessee General Assembly and signed into law by Governor Haslam:

Senate Judiciary Committee 1
Amendment No.  1 to SB1774

Kelsey
Signature of Sponsor
AMEND    Senate Bill No. 1774  House Bill No. 1480*

by deleting all language after the enacting clause and by substituting instead the following:
(Deleted sections in red, added sections in blue)

SECTION 1. Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 39-17-1307, is amended by deleting
subsection (e) in its entirety

(e)  (1) It is an exception to the application of subsection (a) that a person authorized to carry a handgun pursuant to § 39-17-1351 is transporting a rifle or shotgun in or on a privately-owned motor vehicle and the rifle or shotgun does not have ammunition in the chamber. However, the person does not violate this section by inserting ammunition into the chamber if the ammunition is inserted for purposes of justifiable self-defense pursuant to § 39-11-611 or § 39-11-612.

  (2) It is an exception to the application of subsection (a) that a person who is not authorized to possess a handgun pursuant to § 39-17-1351 is transporting a rifle or shotgun in or on a privately-owned motor vehicle and the rifle or shotgun does not have ammunition in the chamber or cylinder, and no clip or magazine containing ammunition is inserted in the rifle or shotgun or is in close proximity to both the weapon and any person.

and substituting instead the following:

(e)  (1) It is an exception to the application of subsection (a)* that a person is carrying or possessing a firearm or firearm ammunition in a motor vehicle if the person:
(A) Is not prohibited from possessing or receiving a firearm by 18 U.S.C. § 922(g) or purchasing a firearm by § 39-17-1316; and
(B) Is in lawful possession of the motor vehicle.

    (2) As used in this subsection:
(A) “Motor vehicle” has the same meaning as defined in § 55-1-103**.
(B) “Motor vehicle” does not include any motor vehicle that is:
(i) Owned or leased by a governmental or private entity that has adopted a written policy prohibiting firearms or ammunition not required for employment within such a motor vehicle; and
(ii) Provided by such entity to an employee for use during the course of employment.

SECTION 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2014, the public welfare requiring it.

*(a)  (1) A person commits an offense who carries with the intent to go armed a firearm, a knife with a blade length exceeding four inches (4'') [note: 4" limit repealed as of July 1, 2014], or a club.

**55-1-103.  (c) "Motor vehicle" means every vehicle that is self-propelled, excluding motorized bicycles and every vehicle that is propelled by electric power obtained from overhead trolley wires. "Motor vehicle" means any low speed vehicle, or medium speed vehicle as defined in this section. "Motor vehicle" means any mobile home or house trailer as defined in § 55-1-105.

Note to citizens who decide to take advantage of this new law. Keeping your handgun, proof of insurance, and registration in the same location is not a good idea.

What we've been sayin'

Heinlein said, as quoted in goodreads,
An armed society is a polite society. Manners are good when one may have to back up his acts with his life.
FOX59 quotes some supporting statistics from Indy Police:
Here’s a look at the stats for Saturday Night Problems in the month of April:
  • April 5: 300 teens at Circle Centre
  • April 12: 200 teens in large groups
  • April 19: 400 teens and shots fired
  • April 26 (NRA Convention): 100 teens, dispersed quickly
Yet, Knoxville and Farragut bosses still keep citizens disarmed in city parks.

Coming in July - knife law changes

Currently, switchblades are banned in Tennessee. It is also unlawful to carry a blade over 4" with intent to go armed. I suppose one can infer that it is currently OK in Tennessee to carry a 3 1/2" blade with intent to go armed.

July 1st, the law changes. Switchblades will be legal. Blade lengths over 4" will also be legal. Does that mean you swashbucklers will be setting a new standard in Tennessee?

Hmmm. . . .

Enrichment FCU doesn't ban hats

My bank, Enrichment Federal Credit Union doesn't ban hats (or guns, for that matter). They don't charge exorbitant fees every time you walk through the door, either.

If you bank where they ban hats, you should think about your banking relationship. Ask your banker if they ban hats but not hijabs or turbans; if so, you really should think seriously about your banking relationship.

Easter 2014, what's your choice?

It is everywhere around you. Even the calender tells part of the story. This week, we celebrate Easter 2014; that's AD 2014. AD stands for the Latin, Anno Domini, which is translated to English as In the year of the Lord*

Jesus Christ was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, crucified on a cross, buried, and resurrected on the third day. He ascended to heaven where He lives now, and will return one day in power and glory. Consider His claims. If they are true, He is your only choice.

If you are in the Knoxville, TN area, come visit First Baptist Concord, Saturday at 6 pm or Easter Sunday at 9 or 10:45 am.
