Unalienable Right to Life

We celebrate the Fourth of July this weekend, in memory of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, which begins:
When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. . .

When I consider the unalienable right to life, in light of the recent McDonald v Chicago case -
The unalienable right to life is meaningless without the means of preserving life. The personal firearm has proven time and again to be the best instrument for that purpose. Anyone who would deprive you of that instrument is misguided at best, or at worst, has leanings toward despotism, as did King George III.

Fireworks

Every year we celebrate July 4th, Independence Day, with backyard barbecues, friendly gatherings, and fireworks.

Knox Countians dutifully gather at the Worlds Fair Park, and watch the authorized fireworks show, set to music.

But wait, not all of us are downtown, because lots of folks gather in neighborhoods and shoot roman candles, bottle rockets, and assorted fireworks, and celebrate the 4th in a more personal way.

The problem is, fireworks are illegal in Knox County. This has worked well for fireworks dealers at the Loudon County line. . . but, it must be a source of confusion for the children.

"Johnny, we should always obey the law. . . Ya wanna go over to Dixie Lee and get some bottle rockets for the 4th?"

It's time for the Knox County Commission to reverse this silly law.

The next domino to fall?

Otis McDonald whips Chicago

In a 5-4 decision today, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Otis McDonald and his co-plaintiffs in the McDonald v Chicago case. Thanks to friend Joe for the link to the ruling.

In this case, the Supremes formally recognized that the 2nd Amendment is incorporated against the states, and does not simply apply to Federal enclaves.

Kudos to Alan Gura, the lead attorney in this case,and  to Alan Gottlieb, head of the Second Amendment Foundation, and Tennessee alum who provided major support in this effort. The Alans also won the Heller v DC case two years ago.

Unknown to many of us has been the idea that amendments in the Bill of Rights must be incorporated before they actually apply to state and local governments. Read more on this in my Examiner article on the subject.
