Heroic PA doctor uses defensive handgun in gun free zone

In spite of being in a GFZ, the doctor packed heat. Locally, Knoxville and Farragut persist in banning guns in parks, in spite of reported crimes in those areas. More at Examiner HERE.

Jason Zachary for Congress

I will be voting for Jason Zachary to represent the Second District of Tennessee. Status quo is not working in Washington, D.C. As part of that status quo, the Duncan family has held the Second District seat for half a century, almost 20% of our nation's existence. As he wrote in a letter to my wife some years ago, the only term limit Mr. Duncan agrees with is for the electorate to vote him out. Let's honor that.

With that in mind, I am reproducing, with permission, this from Bill Johns:

Letter to the Editor:

KNS and KNS Editorial Board-

Almost fifty years ago in 1965 when gas cost around .30 cents a gallon and a first class stamp cost a nickel is also when the former Congressman John Duncan, SR. was elected to office for Tennessee’s 2nd District.  At that time, no one had been to the moon, Silicon Valley was just in its infancy, and the Woodstock  Festival was even years off.  Since then the Duncan legacy has built and maintained their very own and personal “entitlement program” with this seat financed through five decades of US taxpayers, pork programs, and influence.

Musing on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict

Its like shampooing your hair. . . .

How many times has this scenario played out in my lifetime?

Hamas (or some other Islamist militant group) fires indiscriminately into Israel, shooting not at military targets, but at the general population.

Israel fires back, inevitably hitting and killing noncombatants, because the aforementioned jihadis hide among the general population.

American alphabet television has a tear-fest over the loss of life in Gaza.

Israel apologizes for hitting the noncombatants.

A cease-fire is called.

Hamas doesn't honor the cease-fire.

Israel resumes combat operations.

Some outside government brokers a peace deal.

Rinse, lather, repeat.

How many times? Does anyone know?

Did you know that when a vet needs to visit the VA in Knoxville he/she must travel to and from the VA facility unarmed. Doesn't matter if they have a Permit. Doesn't matter that Tennessee law now authorizes permitless vehicle carry. More commentary HERE.

CDC should stick to their business

The CDC keeps having serious problems with storage of deadly bacteria.

They should concentrate their resources there, rather than their bogus leftist attempt at designating guns as an epidemic problem.

The epidemic is one of recidivist criminals plaguing our society, and our sport fishing criminal justice system.

Defend the border

A note to Rick Perry and other southern border state governors.

You have, I believe, the authority to call out the National Guard. It is high time to activate them, and unroll a few hundred miles of concertina wire.
We are undergoing a full-scale invasion and the dear leader in Washington is not going to do anything about it.
Step up! Seal your portion of the border! Quit complaining about his inaction!

Zenith Zoysia update

If you have bare areas, take a look at these photos, and then check out the tab at the top entitled Tennessee lawn grass. These are photos of Zenith Zoysia taken during the second growing season. Click to see a larger image. Seed were sewn over plug aerated soil May 2013. These pictures were taken June 17, 2014.
Seed sprouted last summer, watered last summer PRN, and only rain water this second summer. No topsoil here.

The longest stolon (runner) is about a foot long.

By the end of year four, with just rain water, this are should have close to complete coverage.
The green clump in the center is a Zoysia plant. As it grows, it will put runners out into the bare area.

Unwarranted attack on permitless open carry

My rebuttal to a recent letter to the editor of the Knoxville News-Sentinel. If you subscribe to the N-S, you can see the slightly edited version they published HERE.
Photo © Oleg Volk. All rights reserved. Used with permission

The recent letter writer, Ben Brabson, in his opposition to permitless open carry of handguns, begins with an ad hominem attack on Senator Campfield, and ends with a false assertion concerning the conduct of fellow Tennesseans.
He reminisces about his childhood firearms usage and the safety indoctrination he received from his father and uncles. I guess he missed the Bill of Rights indoctrination, which speaks of keeping and bearing arms, not for food gathering or pest control, but for defense against unlawful felonious aggression. I guess he missed the definition of infringed in the Second Amendment, which has the same meaning as abridged in the First. Maybe, too, he missed the definition of the people.
The fact is, the writer shows his callous disregard for the safety and well-being of his lower-income neighbors who can’t afford the poll tax on the individual right to bear arms. He, by extension, becomes a co-conspirator with criminals who prey on the lawfully disarmed. Are the lives of these citizens of such less value?
He asserts that if permitless open carry is passed next year,
there will be a version of the gunfight at the O.K. Corral repeated in every county of the state on a daily basis.
He may be surprised, then, to learn that every county of every state bordering Tennessee, except Georgia already has permitless open carry. Can he point to crime statistics that would support his assertion? In Kentucky alone, that would add up to 43,800 gunfights last year.
He insults Tennesseans by insinuating that we are less capable of self-restraint than people in those seven states. Are we, sir, such a bunch of rubes, that we can’t be trusted to exercise a God-given, natural right, unless we first purchase a permission slip from our Master, the State?
Respectfully,
Liston Matthews

Ultimately, there is no middle ground. Gun prohibitionists keep looking for ways to reduce/eliminate private ownership and use of firearms. They are never content, either, with partial steps. Given their choice, total prohibition is the ultimate goal.

Best Barbecue!!

I have been grilling and smoking meat for many decades, but today I cooked the best ribs ever.

My ribs have usually been somewhat dry by the time they had smoked for several hours. I have recently seen some folks on the tube smoke the ribs for three hours at about 250, then wrap in foil, and put back on the grill for another three hours at 250.

Did that today!

The bones pulled right out, and you can cut the meat with a fork. So tender and juicy.

Less sauce on the face, too.

Give it a try.

SECTION 1. Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 39-17-1307, is amended by deleting
subsection (e) in its entirety

  (2) It is an exception to the application of subsection (a) that a person who is not authorized to possess a handgun pursuant to § 39-17-1351 is transporting a rifle or shotgun in or on a privately-owned motor vehicle and the rifle or shotgun does not have ammunition in the chamber or cylinder, and no clip or magazine containing ammunition is inserted in the rifle or shotgun or is in close proximity to both the weapon and any person.

and substituting instead the following:

(e)  (1) It is an exception to the application of subsection (a)* that a person is carrying or possessing a firearm or firearm ammunition in a motor vehicle if the person:

    (2) As used in this subsection:
(A) “Motor vehicle” has the same meaning as defined in § 55-1-103**.
(B) “Motor vehicle” does not include any motor vehicle that is:
(i) Owned or leased by a governmental or private entity that has adopted a written policy prohibiting firearms or ammunition not required for employment within such a motor vehicle; and
(ii) Provided by such entity to an employee for use during the course of employment.

SECTION 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2014, the public welfare requiring it.

*(a)  (1) A person commits an offense who carries with the intent to go armed a firearm, a knife with a blade length exceeding four inches (4'') [note: 4" limit repealed as of July 1, 2014], or a club.
